How Toy Story 5 Took Over an Entire Airplane For Its Promotion

Movie promotions usually happen through trailers, billboards, and social media. But for Toy Story 5, The Walt Disney Company decided to take the campaign 30,000 feet in the air.

In partnership with China Eastern Airlines, Disney transformed an ordinary domestic flight into a fully immersive Toy Story experience. Let's see how they did it.

Disney Turned an Airbus A330 Into a Flying Toy Story Experience

At first glance, the aircraft already looked familiar. That's because the Buzz Lightyear and Woody-themed exterior wasn't actually new.

The special livery was first introduced in 2018 to celebrate the opening of Toy Story Land at Shanghai Disney Resort.

But for the release of Toy Story 5, Disney gave the aircraft a brand-new purpose by completely redesigning its interior.

Passengers stepped into a cabin inspired by Pixar's beloved franchise, where overhead bins, tray tables, seat cushions, and even the ceiling were transformed into themed elements from the Toy Story universe.

The Experience Didn't Stop With the Cabin Design

Disney understood that memorable experiences are built through small details. So the campaign went far beyond decorating the aircraft.

Passengers received commemorative Toy Story boarding passes, enjoyed a special themed in-flight menu, listened to character-themed cabin announcements, and even got free in-flight Wi-Fi so they could watch the Toy Story 5 trailer while flying.

Every touchpoint of the journey reinforced the same story. By the time passengers landed, they had already experienced the movie before ever watching it, making them even more curious to watch it.

Why This Marketing Campaign Worked

Most movie promotions ask people to pay attention for a few seconds. Disney created an experience that held passengers' attention for an entire flight.

Instead of treating the airplane as advertising space, it treated it as an extension of the Toy Story world.

That's what made the campaign feel less like an advertisement and more like an experience worth talking about.

The Marketing Lesson You Can Learn

People rarely remember a campaign because they saw an ad, they remember how a brand made them feel.

Disney could have simply wrapped another airplane in Toy Story branding. Instead, it transformed an everyday flight into a memorable experience filled with thoughtful details and interactive moments.

The result wasn't just publicity for Toy Story 5, it gave passengers a story they would naturally share with others. And that's often the difference between a campaign people see and one they genuinely remember.
