BCP Bank in Peru came up with a very useful solution through a campaign that didn't just raise awareness about financial fraud but also introduced a service that could prevent it altogether, called "SOS POS".
Created in partnership with Circus Grey, the initiative transformed an everyday payment terminal into an emergency tool.
Let's see why this campaign stood out.
The Problem: Phone Theft & Far Beyond
Phone theft has become one of Peru's biggest public safety concerns. More than 4,000 mobile phones are reported stolen every single day, and for many victims, losing the device is only the beginning of the problem.
Today's smartphones hold banking apps, digital wallets, OTPs, passwords, and access to personal information.
Criminals often use that access to empty victims' bank accounts within minutes of stealing the phone.
Banks already provide emergency helplines to freeze cards and block accounts, but there is one obvious flaw. How do you call your bank when the phone you need to make that call has just been stolen?
It was a simple question asked by BCP Bank that exposed a major gap in the system.
BCP Bank Turned POS Machines Into Emergency Banking Stations
Instead of asking customers to find another phone or visit a bank branch, BCP looked at a device that already existed almost everywhere - payment terminals.
Known as Point of Sale (POS) machines, these devices are present in neighbourhood grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, restaurants, and hardware shops across Peru.
BCP transformed these everyday payment machines into emergency banking touchpoints.
Whenever someone's phone was stolen, they could walk into any participating store, enter their national ID number and a secure PIN on the POS machine, and instantly freeze access to their bank accounts. This entire process took only a few seconds.
What was originally designed to process payments suddenly became a tool for protecting people's money.
The Campaign Focused on Education Before Promotion
A solution is only useful if people know it exists. So, to introduce SOS POS, BCP partnered with Circus Grey to create a campaign built around a simple but powerful insight.
Instead of relying on exaggerated storytelling, the campaign highlighted the reality of phone theft in Peru using real statistics, relatable situations, and a clear explanation of how SOS POS works.
The script avoided unnecessary drama. Instead, it educated people about a problem they already feared while showing them a practical solution they could remember during an emergency.
That balance between information and storytelling made the campaign feel credible rather than promotional.
