Burger King sponsored this entire wedding...

Burger King pulled off this once-in-a-decade earned media gem by paying for an entire wedding…

Back in 2015, Burger King sponsored the wedding of Joel Burger and Ashley King, because, yes, their last names were Burger and King.

Burger King announced the sponsorship through a video message and officially titled it “The Whopper of a Wedding”.

The couple had only asked for permission to use the BK logo, but the brand spotted a golden opportunity and offered to cover the whole celebration.

They covered everything: travel, food, venue, photography, outfits, custom BK swag, and even special packaging inspired by the Whopper.

The wedding also included a professional photoshoot and a full digital rollout across BK’s social channels.

Burger King also gave guests some very on-brand swag: there were paper crowns for everyone.

Guests showed up in Burger King brand goodies, the groom was wearing a BK t-shirt inside his tux, napkins had the BK logo...in short, turning it into a subtly BK-themed wedding.

This “Whopper of a Wedding” made national and international headlines, generating publicity worth billions.

According to news reports, the story received over 2.3 billion media impressions globally in just a few weeks, all without running a single paid ad.

Nearly a decade later, that headline still travels because it’s fun, human, and perfectly on-brand.

As a marketer, be honest, have you ever thought of something like this crazy?
