How a Global Toy Giant Used Lenskart to Enter Indian Market

Launching a global brand in a new country is never easy. Especially when your product isn't something people buy every day.

That's the challenge POP MART, the Chinese collectables giant behind viral characters like Labubu, faced while entering India.

Instead of opening with another toy store or running traditional ads, POP MART partnered with Lenskart to launch something nobody expected - a limited-edition eyewear collection.

Let's see why this launch worked.

Why POP MART Chose Lenskart for Its India Debut

POP MART has built a global fanbase around one simple idea: blind boxes.

Customers never know which collectable they'll receive until they open the package, turning every purchase into an experience.

For its first official collaboration in India, POP MART teamed up with Lenskart to bring that same excitement into fashion. The collaboration featured a 21-piece collection of eyeglasses and sunglasses inspired by POP MART's beloved Sweet Bean character, specifically its "I Want A Hug" series.

Rather than asking Indians to start collecting designer toys, POP MART introduced themselves through a product millions already use: eyewear.

It was an easier and far more accessible entry point into the brand.

Lenskart Stores Became Interactive POP MART Playgrounds

How? Because the collaboration wasn't limited to just product shelves.

To celebrate the launch, Lenskart transformed retail spaces inside major shopping malls into immersive POP MART experiences.

Visitors were greeted by giant Sweet Bean installations, interactive photo spots, and eye-catching bright-blue popsicle carts inspired by the character's playful world.

Instead of simply displaying products, the stores encouraged people to stop, explore, take photos, and interact with the brand. So, the retail space itself became part of the campaign.

They Turned Buying Glasses Into a Blind Box Experience

The smartest part of the collaboration wasn't the eyewear. It was what happened after someone bought it.

Every pair of frames came with a mystery blind packet containing collectable magnetic charms that could be attached to the glasses.

Because customers didn't know which charm they would receive, every purchase recreated the surprise element that made POP MART famous worldwide.

In other words, POP MART successfully translated their signature toy mechanic into wearable fashion.

Why This Marketing Campaign Worked

Most international brands enter a new market by introducing the same product they sell everywhere else.

But POP MART took a different route, instead of convincing Indians to buy designer collectables immediately, they partnered with a trusted lifestyle brand that already had thousands of retail touchpoints across the country.

The collaboration blended fashion, retail, and collectable culture into one experience.

For Lenskart customers, it made buying eyewear more exciting and for POP MART, it introduced millions of people to its characters in a way that felt natural rather than forced.

The Marketing Lesson You Can Learn

Entering a new market isn't always about selling your core product straight up, sometimes, it's about providing a unique experience first.

POP MART didn't launch in India by asking people to become toy collectors overnight. They introduced their characters through a product people were already shopping for, while keeping the surprise and collectibility that define their brand.

That's what made this campaign so effective.
